Large crane near Southwest Tower this Saturday
March 16, 2020
Sent on behalf of Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
This Saturday, a crane will be set up in the alley between Queeny Tower and Southwest Tower/Barnes-Jewish emergency department (ED) to remove an MRI from the fifth floor of the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology. (see map for location)
The crane will extend above the height of Southwest Tower, forcing the closure of the BJH helipad from approximately 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Plans have been coordinated with both BJH and St. Louis Children’s Hospital (SLCH) EDs and public safety. Standard protocols established by both EDs will divert helicopters to the SLCH helipad or to Forest Park, only if necessary. Public safety will secure the area below the crane during operation.
The link connecting the 5th floor Southwest Tower to 7th floor Rand Johnson will be closed. A detour via the Central Elevators to the street level to access Southwest Tower has been coordinated and walked with departments requiring patient transport. Signs will be posted along the route.
On Saturday, March 28, the same plan will be followed to install a new MRI. Work will shift to Sundays in the event of bad weather.
