Addressing transportation safety needs across the WashU Medicine campus.
Enterprise Physical Operations-Medicine’s Transportation Safety and Education Program works to address safety needs across all forms of transportation on the WashU Medicine campus through robust and accessible safety information.
The program provides campus education services that seek to improve transportation safety and to encourage more active transportation by creating an environment where everyone can commute safely and comfortably.

Goals
- Increase awareness surrounding transportation safety
- Increase comfort with and adoption of active transportation options
- Reduce transportation-related accidents on the WashU Medicine campus

Drive Smart
- Avoid distracted driving. The Siddens Bening hands-free law prohibits drivers from holding or supporting a cell phone or electronic communication device in Missouri.
- Follow the speed limit. Driving at higher speeds increases the risk of accidents and the
severity of injuries. - Share the road responsibly. Drivers must treat bicyclists like any other vehicle.

Bike Smart
- Wear a helmet. Helmets prevent injuries and save lives in the case of a collision or a tumble.
- Know the traffic rules. Bicyclists have the same rules, rights, and responsibilities as
drivers. For example, bicyclists must stop at stop signs and drive on the right-hand side of
the road. - Maintain your bike. Perform the ABC Quick Check before you ride: check the air level of
your tires, make sure the brakes work effectively, and check for rust or other issues on the chains.

Walk Smart
- Phones down, heads up. Keep focused on your surroundings by putting your phone down,
- especially when crossing the street.
- Cross streets safely. Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections and stay alert while
doing so. - Don’t rely on drivers to keep you safe. Never assume a driver sees you. Make eye contact
at intersections before crossing their path.

Ride Smart
- Be aware of your surroundings. If you see something suspicious, report it to Metro Public Safety.
- Don’t forget your U-Pass. Full-time registered students, benefits-eligible faculty and staff
members, and full-time employees of basic service contractors can register for a
complimentary U-Pass. - Plan your trip. Use Metro’s Trip Planner to make a plan before you head out the door.
