Guidelines for Conducting Hot Work on the Washington University School of Medicine Campus
1. Preparation Before Hot Work:
– Ensure you have a hot work permit visible and displayed while work is being done and until the day after completion.
– Complete the checklist on the hot work permit prior to beginning hot work.
– Contact Washington University Security at (314) 362-4357 before starting any hot work to inform them of your activities.
– Be mindful of your surroundings and take necessary precautions to prevent damage to property.
– Pay special attention to sprinkler heads in the area. Note: Sprinkler systems are energized and will NOT be drained under normal circumstances. Take the necessary precautions to avoid triggering the sprinkler system. If it is felt that a sprinkler system needs to be drained down and/or heads temporarily removed for special situations (Ex. working in a confined space) please contact a member of the Fire Alarm Crew well in advance of the anticipated hot work. This will be determined at the discretion of the Fire Alarm Crew.
2. Safety Equipment:
– Always have a fire extinguisher present.
– Use smoke eaters when welding and/or a significant amount of smoke is expected.
3. Conduct During Hot Work:
– Be mindful of your surroundings and take necessary precautions to prevent damage to property.
– Pay special attention to sprinkler heads in the area. Note: Sprinkler systems are energized and will NOT be drained under normal circumstances. Take the necessary precautions to avoid triggering the sprinkler system. – In the event of the fire alarm system activating, and if you believe it is due to your hot work, immediately notify a member of the Fire Alarm Crew to assess the situation:

4. Interaction with Representatives:
– If approached by a WashU representative (Security, Facilities, or a member of Management) and asked to stop all hot work, please cooperate fully.
5. Completion of Hot Work:
– After completing the hot work, contact Washington University Security again at (314) 362-4357 to inform them that the hot work is completed.
– Perform a 2-hour fire watch after the completion of all hot work to monitor for any signs of fire or other hazards.
