Providing around-the-clock support to the WashU Medical Campus.
The Environmental Services (EVS) Team supports the school around the clock with a dayshift portering team, an afternoon and evening team, and a project crew.
Our services are primarily performed by our in-house staff of approximately 230 full-time employees (FTEs), who maintain most Tier 1 and 2 WashU Medicine buildings. We service the remaining buildings through an outside vendor (Tier 3 and beyond).
Our Teams
The portering team is our first responder throughout the day, maintaining high-traffic areas and dealing with emergencies. This team also supports our customers for campus events by setting up tables and chairs and providing cleaning services afterward.
The EVS support team is responsible for maintaining the custodial equipment, laundering cleaning towels, and stocking paper goods and trash bags.
The afternoon EVS group is our largest team, conducting detailed cleaning, including dusting, vacuuming, floor care, trash and recycling pickup, and restroom cleaning, between 2:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Given the customer activity in the Mid Campus Center, Becker Medical Library, Gary C. Werths Building at Siteman Cancer Center, and the Farrell Learning & Teaching Center, we provide detailed cleaning services for these locations between 10 p.m. and 6:30 a.m.
The Project Crew performs annual floor care and scheduled floor recovery services for all carpeted and hard floors. This team provides carpet extraction, strip-and-wax, and other on-site deep-cleaning services. To maximize quality and safety, floor recovery projects are generally performed from 10 pm to 6:30 am during minimal traffic.

EVS Cleaning Schedules
To provide a clean and safe environment for staff, students, patients, faculty, and visitors we have three different shifts for optimal coverage. Our cleaning schedules are as follows:
-7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (including Sat/Sun)
-2:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
-10:00 p.m. – 6:30 a.m. (FLTC, Werths Building and Becker only)

Cleaning Service Levels
WashU Medicine Environmental Services provides routine cleaning to more than 80 buildings. Each building has dedicated professionals assigned to perform specific custodial services on a scheduled basis outlined in the cleaning matrix below.

This committee of frontline custodians meets regularly to identify more ways to reduce our environmental footprint.

Green Cleaning Program:
Green cleaning is defined as cleaning to protect the health of occupants without harming the environment through the use of products and processes associated with cleaning.
Green cleaning helps improve indoor air quality and reduce health problems that traditional products and processes can cause. With green cleaning, building occupants experience fewer incidences of irritations or sensitivities to the indoor environment.
Studies have shown that facilities that go green have healthier occupants and employees, higher worker productivity, lower operating costs and a positive environmental impact.
