The Environmental Services (EVS) Team supports the school around the clock with a dayshift portering team, an afternoon and evening team, and a project crew. Our services are primarily performed by our in-house staff of approximately 228 full-time employees (FTEs), who maintain most Tier 1 and 2 WashU Medicine buildings. We service the remaining buildings through an outside vendor (Tier 3 and beyond).

Staffing Portering Team
The portering team is our first responder throughout the day, maintaining high-traffic areas and dealing with emergencies. This team also supports our customers for campus events by setting up tables and chairs and providing cleaning services afterward.

Support Team
The EVS support team is responsible for maintaining the custodial equipment, laundering cleaning towels, and stocking paper goods and trash bags.

Afternoon EVS Team
The afternoon EVS group is our largest team that conducts detailed cleaning, including dusting, vacuuming, floor care, trash and recycle pick up, and restroom cleaning between 2:30 pm and 11 pm.

Evening EVS Team
Given the customer activity in the Mid Campus Center, Becker Medical Library, Gary C. Werths Building at Siteman Cancer Center, and the Farrell Learning & Teaching Center, we provide detailed cleaning services for these locations between 10 pm and 6:30 am.

Project Crew
The Project Crew performs annual floor care and scheduled floor recovery services for all carpeted and hard floors. This team provides carpet extraction, strip and wax, and other on-site deep cleaning services. To maximize quality and safety, floor recovery projects are generally performed from 10 pm to 6:30 am during minimal traffic.

Green Cleaning Program:

Green cleaning is defined as cleaning to protect the health of occupants without harming the environment through the use of products and processes associated with cleaning.

Green cleaning helps improve indoor air quality and reduce health problems that traditional products and processes can cause. With green cleaning, building occupants experience fewer incidences of irritations or sensitivities to the indoor environment.

Studies have shown that facilities that go green have healthier occupants and employees, higher worker productivity, lower operating costs and a positive environmental impact.
