OFMD Staffing Update – Protective Services

We are pleased to announce an important leadership transition for John Ursch, Executive Director of Public Safety & Campus Services. For more than 30 years, John has served WashU in numerous roles, including officer, supervisor, manager, director, and executive director, shaping Protective Services into the professional, trusted, and responsive organization it is today. His leadership has been instrumental in building our Protective Services and Emergency Management programs, as well as in strengthening partnerships across the University and with external agencies.

Effective September 30, 2025, John retired from his role as Executive Director. After a short retirement, he will return in early to mid-November in a part-time position as Strategic Partner for Safety and Security Services, Technology, and Program Planning. In this capacity, John will remain on the Senior Leadership Team and continue to work closely with Protective Services and Emergency Management, focusing on strategy, capital planning, and cross-campus coordination.

He will collaborate directly with Melissa Rockwell-Hopkins, Chris Mattingly, and Ty Davisson as we continue aligning safety, operations, and service delivery across the University, BJC, and WashU Medicine. Chris and Ty will continue to lead their respective areas, ensuring Public Safety remains in strong and capable hands.

Please join us in thanking John for his outstanding leadership and in supporting him as he transitions into this new role. His ongoing contributions will continue to be a vital asset to our department, the University, and our partners.
