Sustainable Operations Strategic Plan
WashU Medicine Sustainability programs and initiatives are guided by objectives laid out in the Sustainable Operations 2025-2030 Strategic Plan.
Developed by the Operations and Facilities Management Department, this plan includes implementation strategies across multiple areas of sustainability and builds thoughtfully on accomplishments and insights gained from the Sustainable Operations Strategic Plan for 2018 – 2025 and accompanying Midterm Update in 2023, while also laying the foundation for new goals.
The plan is characterized by OFMD’s campus responsibilities to:
We empower and collaborate with the campus community and key partners to foster a
culture of sustainability across WashU campuses and the St. Louis region.
We aim to be a model among peers in the sustainable design and management of WashU
Medicine buildings and landscapes by embedding sustainability throughout the built
environment from project inception to daily operations.
We reduce Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions on the WashU Medicine campus
through energy efficiency and retro-commissioning projects. A Scope 3 reduction strategy
is under development.
We strive to reduce the percentage of single-occupant vehicle commuters to and around
campus through sustainable infrastructure improvements alongside incentives and
education for sustainable transportation options.
We reduce waste generation and increase WashU Medicine’s waste diversion rate through
internal reuse programs, sustainable purchasing, strategic partnerships, and programming.
We partner with dining service providers and local partners to support the regional food
economy and increase access to healthy, sustainably sourced, and local food.
