As part of the East McDonnell Cooling Tower Replacement Project, from January 17-18, workers will shut down the 75-psi steam system serving the East McDonnell Building and place the final crane lifts required to set new cooling tower equipment on the roof.
This activity represents a major milestone for the project, and the work has been coordinated with Facilities Operations, the general contractor, and all trade partners.
What will occur during this planned outage:
- A controlled shutdown of the 75-psi steam system feeding the East McDonnell building will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on January 17. This shutdown allows contractors to complete tie-ins and install new valves in the penthouse and 5th-floor mechanical spaces. The outage may affect equipment and systems throughout the building that are served by the 75-psi PRV station on the 5th floor.
- A large mobile crane will be positioned near the building to support the final placement of the new cooling towers on the roof. This may require temporary closures or restricted access in the lift area for safety reasons.
What the campus community may notice:
- Increased personnel, equipment, and vehicle activity in the area.
- Temporary sidewalk or drive-lane restrictions around the crane setup.
- Steam-related equipment may be offline for portions of the day in East McDonnell, though impacts to building occupants are expected to be minimal.
