Several years of work in front of the hospital to improve the arrival experience, including the entrance, drop off, and valet areas, will draw to a conclusion this fall. That’s great news. However, some disruptions are on the horizon as the construction team gears up the repave Barnes-Jewish Plaza.
The preparation and repaving will be completed in two phases to help minimize the disruption. Phases are outlined below.
Phase 1 – leveling uneven areas (August 28 through early October)
The first phase will entail leveling the road in two areas show on the map. Much of the work over the past several years has resulted in an uneven surface with as much as a couple inches difference in areas. Some of the previous work included replacing city water lines and other infrastructure under the road, rebuilding the garage entrance, and relocating and expanding the main entrance and drop off areas.
- The first area is just east of the Plaza garage exit, shown in green on the map.
- One of the eastbound lanes will be closed.
- Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times.
- Once this area is completed, it will reopen.
- The second area is the center of Barnes-Jewish Plaza, west of the pedestrian bridge extending east past the garage entrance. This area will close for about three weeks.
- One lane will remain open in both directions adjacent to this area.
- Vehicles exiting the garage will have to turn right (east) and will be detoured Euclid Ave., to Clayton Ave., to Hospital Dr., to Kingshighway. Signage will be posted.
- Exiting valet and drop off vehicles will be directed around the closed area.
- A temporary crosswalk will be in place close
- Once this section is leveled, milling and repaving will begin.
Phase 2 – milling and repaving (early to mid-October over two weekends)
During the second phase, the entire road between Kingshighway Blvd. and Euclid Ave. will be milled, which is the removal of the old surface, and then repaved with asphalt. The schedule, impact, and detours for this phase will be shared in September.
Team members and physicians are encouraged to avoid Barnes-Jewish Plaza and take alternate routes. Weather may affect the schedule, and changes will be communicated.
