A project to renovate the emergency department (ED) entry and waiting areas will start September 28 with the closing of the drop-off and parking areas in front of the hospital and rerouting of family emergency traffic. The ambulance bay will remain open at all times, and ambulance arrival and departure are not affected.
The project team has worked closely with ED leadership, public safety, valet parking, guest relations, and others to develop a solid plan to accommodate families, physicians, and ambulances arriving at the ED.
The area indicated on the map will close starting September 28. Measures in place to accommodate the closed area include the following:
- Patient drop-offwill have two options, with public safety and valet directing families in communication with patient transport:
- Landscaping area indicated on the map. (A tree and animal statue will be relocated.)
- Ambulance bay indicated on the map. The two drive lanes can accommodate the MICU and a passenger van. Valet will be on site 24/7 and will immediately move personal vehicles.
- Emergency physician parking will have two options:
- See the map for the location near the ED entrance.
- See the map for the second location on the sidewalk just west of the visitor garage entrance.
- A comprehensive signage plan has been developed, and the team will make adjustments as it observes areas for improvement.
- A crosswalk will be painted across Children’s Place to help direct those parking in the garage to the ED.
This phase to reconfigure the parking and drop-off area and build a new canopy is expected to conclude in January, weather permitting.
ED project overview
Overall, the ED project includes creating a new ED entrance with an exterior canopy, reconfiguring and expanding triage, adding new security and information stations, and expanding the waiting area. It’s being renovated in phases to minimize the disruption.
The second phase, which includes triage, the interior entrance, and the corridor, will begin in September. More information will be shared closer to the start of this phase.
