A Message from Metro Transit.
On Monday, July 6, Metro Transit will reach one of the most significant milestones in its history as we begin activating the next generation of fare collection technology and automated security gates across the MetroLink system. This launch represents the final major component of our Secure Platform Plan and fulfills two commitments we made to the St. Louis region: creating a safer transit environment and modernizing the customer experience.
This implementation will occur through a carefully managed three-phase rollout designed
to ensure a smooth transition for riders while maintaining operational excellence across
the system.
Phase One begins on July 6 with the activation of thirteen MetroLink stations across
Missouri and Illinois. At these locations, customers will be able to independently access
platforms using Metro’s new fare collection technology and automated security gates.
Riders can purchase and manage fares through the Ride On App or Transit App and simply scan their mobile device or fare media at station validators for seamless platform
access.
Phase Two will follow on July 17, bringing the total number of activated stations to 26 and accounting for approximately 91% of MetroLink fare transactions system-wide. Phase Three is scheduled for August 17 and will complete implementation across virtually the entire MetroLink network, pending final Ticket Vending Machine installations.
This phased approach allows Metro Transit to provide focused customer support, monitor
system performance, and ensure riders are comfortable with the new technology before
broader deployment.
Customers visiting activated stations will notice several improvements, including:
- Automated security gates controlling platform access
- New fare validators throughout stations
- Modern Ticket Vending Machines
- Mobile-first fare purchasing through the Ride On and Transit apps
- Updated station signage and customer information resources
- Enhanced security infrastructure designed to improve the customer experience
We recognize that any significant change requires education, communication, and
support. That is why Metro Transit ambassadors, Customer Engagement personnel
and Metro Transit Security officers will be deployed at activated stations throughout
the rollout. These teams will assist riders with fare purchases, gate access and mobile
applications, and any questions they may have during the transition.
In addition, we have launched a comprehensive communications campaign that includes
digital resources, instructional videos, station signage, community outreach, and direct
rider engagement. A dedicated customer information portal at MetroStLouis.org/
NextGenFare provides step-by-step guidance on downloading mobile fare applications,
purchasing fares and navigating the new gate system. QR codes displayed throughout the system will connect riders directly to these resources.
The Secure Platform Plan and Fare Collection Program represent a transformational
investment in the future of public transportation in the St. Louis region. Together, these
initiatives are helping us deliver a transit system that is safer, more secure, more reliable
and better positioned to serve our community for decades to come.
Thank you for your continued partnership, advocacy, and support. We are proud of what we have accomplished together and look forward to sharing this next chapter of Metro
Transit with the region.
